A single volume is proposed. Wedged into the ground, the mass is reminiscent of the primal forms of ancient builders. To exude a vigorous presence in the setting, the building is treated as an object, as a work of art in its own right, as well as a container of art and artifacts. Through controlled geometric manipulation the volume tilts slightly on two of its axes, reinforcing its condition as a monumental single volume and assuring visual tension. This conscious elimination of a Cartesian facade approach results in distinct observations of the building from any exterior view. The singlular quality of the skin is only interrupted at the southeast corner where the entry acts as a welcome sign through its transparency and distinct material. The canting of the building form offers unique views of the centre from any direction and mitigates a back/front reading. Each elevation is distinct while the uniform cladding encourages an appropriate monumental reading for a National Centre for Contemporary Art.
