The strategy incorporates passive design principles that have been employed since the first human shelters were built reliant primarily on site location and climate parameters (latitude, temperature, humidity, wind, precipitation). Critical to this approach are initial site selection criteria and building orientation strategies with respect to solar paths, building massing, solar shading, thermal mass and passive day lighting. Additional sustainable ideas included the incorporation of green roofs, convective cooling, evaporative cooling, and rainwater collection and re-use.
